Harry Gartatzoghian, 97, dies

Worcester, MA.— Harry Gartatzoghian, 97, of Worcester passed away peacefully on Saturday, Oct. 16, 2021.

Mr. Gartatzoghian was born on May 10, 1924 in Worcester, MA. He was a proud WWII veteran, having joined the Navy shortly after his 17th birthday, serving actively on the USS Overton.

He passionately enjoyed owning and training trotter horses throughout his life and spending his days at the farm in Foxboro. He was an avid bowler in his early years, transitioning to a walking enthusiast later in life. He loved reminiscing about his Navy days and could recount details from 80 years ago like they happened yesterday. For several years, Harry organized reunions of other WWII USS Overton veterans. He diligently maintained the Quinsigamond Village War Memorial and received a key to the City of Worcester in 2018 acknowledging his efforts.

Mr. Gartatzoghian’s family would like to thank all the caregivers who ensured his final days were as comfortable as possible.

He was predeceased by his parents, Sarkis and Sophia (Tashjian) Gartatzoghian and his brother, Paul Gartatzoghian. He leaves three loving nieces, Paula Markarian and her husband, Mark of Holden, Doreen Serino and her husband, Richard of Abington, and Susan Bailey of Cohasset; seven great nieces and nephews and their spouses, Zachary Markarian of Brooklyn, NY, Alexa Markarian of Tulsa, OK, Jessica Serino Kato and her husband, Kevin of Ewa Beach, HI, Bryan Serino and his wife, Caroline of Long Island, NY, Peter Serino and his wife, Erin, Paul Bailey and his wife, Kerry of Winchester and Jared Bailey of Hingham; as well as six great great nieces and nephews.

Harry’s family would like to thank all the caregivers who ensured his final days were as comfortable as possible.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visiting hour that will be held Thursday (Oct. 21) from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. followed immediately by a funeral service at Lindquist Lundin Funeral Home, located at 36 Butler St., Worcester, MA. Burial will follow at Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Veteran’s Inc. at 69 Grove Street, Worcester, MA 01605.
