Fifty Fifty (Patrick Berry) benefitted from a late break by Da Boy (Eric Ledford), who made an unlapped-on break just a few feet from the wire to win the $50,000 Hayes Memorial Pace for two-year-old pacing colts on Saturday afternoon at The Du Quoin (Illinois) State Fair.

Patrick Berry and Fifty-Fifty holds off a breaking Da Boy and Eric Ledford in the Hayes Final for two-year-old colt pacers.

Da Boy was first to the lead, hitting the quarter in :29, followed by Fifty Fifty and Hamlet Blue Chip. Just past the quarter, Ab’s Beach Boy (Tony Morgan), who made a break before the gate and spotted the field about six lengths, rushed from the back of the pack to take the lead down the stretch and had that spot before the :58 half. Going past the three-quarters (1:28) into the final turn, Fifty Fifty was up to challenge on the outside, applying pressure to the leader Ab’s Beach Boy. Fifty Fifty was able to hold the lead through the home stretch for the first win of his career in 1:54.4 by about a length and quarter.

“I knew Tony’s horse (Ab’s Beach Boy) would tire after the strong brush, so I tipped him out. I had a lot left in the stretch and he responded when I asked,” said winning driver Patrick Berry. Fifty Fifty is owned by Shirley and Arthur LeVin and trained by Homer Hochstetler.
