Historic Track horses help local gardeners

from Goshen Historic Track

Goshen, NY — Goshen Historic Track, home to about 100 racehorses, is offering free horse manure for local gardeners. The relatively fresh manure is mixed with sawdust and is a great blend of organic material. The nutrient rich material is ready for composting or to be combined with your existing planting mix.

Gardeners can visit the track any day but Sunday, now through April 10, from noon to 4 p.m.; they should bring their own buckets, tubs and shovels. The material is provided on a self service basis, but gardeners are asked to check in at the track’s office on the south end of the grandstand when they arrive.

“Historic Track is a proud member of our community and this is a small way that we can help gardeners in our region,” says Track General Manager Chris Tully. The offer will continue through April 10, or while supplies last. “As long as horses keep eating, our supply will continue to pile up.”

According to University of Minnesota Soil, Water and Climate educational materials, “Manure and compost not only supply many nutrients for crop production, including micronutrients, but they are also vast sources of organic matter. Increasing soil organic matter improves soil structure, increases the water-holding capacity of coarse-textured sandy soils, improves drainage in fine-textured clay soils, provides a source of slow release nutrients, reduces wind and water erosion, and promotes growth of earthworms and other beneficial soil organisms. Most vegetable crops return small amounts of crop residue to the soil, so manure, compost, and other organic amendments help maintain soil organic matter levels.”

Goshen Historic Track, a National Historic Landmark, is located at 44 Park Place in the heart of the ‘Cradle of the Trotter,’ Goshen, New York. A year-round Standardbred training facility, Historic Track will host Matinee racing on the first three Sundays at 1 p.m. in June (6, 13, and 20). In addition, The World’s Oldest Harness Track will celebrate 100 years of Grand Circuit racing July 2 through July 5 at 1 p.m., in conjunction with Goshen’s Great American Weekend. The facility boasts a 2,000 seat grandstand and 20 acre infield which is available for special events, concerts, trade shows, etc.
