Columbus, OH — Howard C. Hammond, 88, died Aug. 21, 2017, at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury, Md.

Born in Powellville, Md., he was the son of the late Clyde F and Margaret (Maggie) Lewis Hammond. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Ruth E.; and his brothers, V. Frank and Harry C. He is survived by his sons, Steven H. and Mark T. (Peggy); sister-in- law, Harriette; and his niece and nephews.

Mr. Hammond attended Wicomico High School, class of 1946, and later Goldey-Beacom College where he received his degree in business administration. After serving two years in the U.S. Army, he was able to put his degree to use when he started his career in insurance. His philosophy of helping others and treating people as you would want to be treated yourself served him well in business and in life. He was a leader with his company. He and Ruth made many friendships and were able to travel to some wonderful parts of the world over his 49 year career.

Besides his family and his business his other passion was harness racing. He loved horses, especially the trotters. He enjoyed helping with the training and care of his horses and the many races he and Ruth attended. There were a few big wins over the years.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent to Coastal Hospice, 2604 Old Ocean City Rd., Salisbury, MD 21801.
