Indiana Downs announces 2009 stakes schedule

Shelbyville, IN — Worth in excess of an estimated $2,5 million, the 2009 stakes schedule at Indiana Downs will be highlighted by some new races and a slew of big racing cards scheduled over the course of the 80-day racing season that begins Saturday, July 24.

New additions to the stakes schedule at Indiana Downs include the $100,000 (est.) Oliver Trotting Classic for 3-year-olds, $75,000 (est.) Indiana Pacing Derby for older pacers, and The Circle City Series for 3-year-old trotters and pacers. The Circle City will carry an estimated purse of $50,000 for each division. All four divisions of the Circle City will be held on Saturday, October 31, along with the Indiana Pacing Derby.

The Kentuckiana Stallion Management Grand Circuit trot and pace for 2-year-old fillies will be contested on Saturday, August 22, along with the $300,000 (est.) Monument Circle for 3-year-old colt and gelding pacers. In addition, the Oliver Trotting Classic will also be contested that evening.

Lastly, the Elevation Stakes for 2-year-old colt and gelding pacers will be held on Saturday, September 26, and will carry an estimated purse of $150,000.

The biggest night for Indiana sired horses, The Indiana Summer Championships, will take place on Saturday, September 12. In its third year, The Indiana Summer Championships looks to be one of the richest dates on the entire racing calendar in Indiana, worth an estimated $1.4 million in purses.
