It’s hard to beat Daley’s Suslow record

from the Meadowlands Publicity Department

For the last few years, trainer Noel Daley has dominated the Robert Suslow Series at the Meadowlands.

His trainees have won three of the last four editions, and he has two candidates for this year’s Suslow in Tricky Grin and Crazy For Ever.

In Saturday night’s second round of the three-week Suslow, Tricky Grin drew into the second race, the first of the two $22,500 divisions, while Crazy For Ever is in the third race. Each will leave from the rail and each is rated 5-1 in the morning line. Mike Lachance will drive Tricky Grin while David Miller has the call on Crazy For Ever.

Since the turn of the this century, Daley has dominated the series for three-year-old pacing colts, winning with Doc Vinall in 2000, Peruvian Hanover in 2001 and Key Western in 2003.

The top 10 money-earners from the first two weeks of the series will advance to the $76,750 Suslow, one of a trio of Spring Series finals on April 24. Sharing the card are the $73,760 Blossom and $46,300 Fox Sports Net.

Tricky Grin won his first two starts of the year but was fourth in first round Suslow action.

“I trained him this week, and he was super,” said Daley. “I didn’t work him too hard last week, and it may have showed. His first two runs were excellent. Expect to see a better Tricky Grin out there this week. Last year, he wasn’t heavily staked, and he kind of fell apart in Canada at the end of September so we stopped with him. He’s going to be going to [trainer] Mike Vanderkemp in Canada after a short while. He’s in the Provincial Cup, the Burlington, the North America Cup and the [Ontario] Sire Stakes. He’s not in the Meadowlands Pace.”

North Woodland Stables recently sold an interest in Tricky Grin to Adam Victor & Son LLC of New York City, also partners in Crazy For Ever.

“He’s not the soundest horse around,” Daley said of Crazy For Ever. “He’s maybe a step below the top ones. He got sore at two and didn’t race. He could always go. He definitely had the talent but soundness issues kept him from making it to the races. Last week he was a little short, and he too didn’t train a whole lot last week. Look for him to be a little better this week also.”

Crazy For Ever has four wins, two seconds and a third in 10 starts for earnings of $34,615. He races for the Victors, Gate To Wire and RCE Stables.
