from the USTA Communications Department

Columbus, OH — On Saturday (Sept. 9), James “Jim” Ellison, 58, died after contending with cancer. The popular horseman was a resident of Park Forest, Ill. and was a familiar face at Hoosier Park, in addition to the Ohio racetracks.

Born in Bellwood, Ill. on July 10, 1959, Ellison earned nearly $4.6 million as a conditioner of Standardbred horses over his nearly 30-year career. Dandy’s Diva (Sportsmaster, 1:54, $73,098), was one of his most prolific trainees, as the filly was third in the 2015 Orange and Blue final as a 2-year-old.

A memorial service is scheduled for Sunday (Sept. 17) at the Crete Funeral Home.
