from the USTA Communications Department

Columbus, OH — Jan H. Filer, 70, of Batavia, N.Y., a well known Standardbred driver and trainer, died Aug. 4, 2015, at his home.

He was born Nov. 11, 1944, in Pittsford, a son of the late Louis W. and Florence (Hall) Filer.

Mr. Filer, from an early age, had an attraction to the harness horse racing circuit and that carried him all over the East Coast, racing some of the best trotters around.

Simply put, ‘‘racing was his life,’’ as he celebrated 50 years in the business in 2012 and was a member of the Western New York Harness Horsemen’s Association.

He retired from driving Standardbreds in 1999. His last steer came at Pocono. He continued to train racehorses until 2005. In fact, in his final year of training Mr. Filer went an impressive 10 for 59. His stable that season included the Open trotter Satelite Dish.

Mr. Filer is survived by his daughters, Deborah (Todd) Dibble and Shauna (Brendan) Blake; grandson, Pasquale (Justina) Rapone III; great-grandchildren, Carter Joseph and Mason Jay; brother, Barrett; sister, Evonne Filer-Zummo; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a brother, Adrian.

The family will be present from 12 noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday (Aug. 13) at the Michael S. Tomaszewski Funeral & Cremation Chapel LLC, 4120 West Main St., Batavia, where a Celebration of Life service will take place at 1 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
