Jeanne Black, 68, dies

Columbus, OH — Jeanne Black, 68, died at Marion General Hospital, Marion, Ind., on Sept. 2, 2018.

She was born in Peru, Ind., on Sept. 30, 1949, to the late Harry B. and Janet E. (Retherford) Sowash.

Mrs. Black was a 1967 graduate of Oak Hill High School and she attended Indiana Business College. On April 15, 1970, she married Robert D. Black, who survives.

Together the couple raced Standardbreds for many years while managing part of the Sowash Family Stable in the Midwest and later training for owners primarily at Chicago area tracks.

After retiring from horse racing she served as a cashier at Walmart for 14 years in Marion, Ind. She attended church at Jalapa Chapel. In her free-time she enjoyed sewing, word search puzzles, and spending time with her beloved dog, Misty.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Black is also survived by her daughter, Stephanie L.; sisters, Trudy A. Sowash, Joanne (Thom) Young, and Julie A. (Gary) Green; brother-in-law, Jim McCann; and seven nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her brother, Jerry L. Sowash; and sister, Patty A. McCann.

The funeral service will be held at 12:15 p.m. on Thursday (Sept. 6) at Owen-Weilert-Duncan Funeral Home Larrison-Martin Chapel, 308 East Marion Street, Converse, Ind., with Pastor James Schroeder officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday (Sept. 6) in the funeral home from 10 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Burial will immediately follow at the Marion National Cemetery, 1700 East 38th St., Marion, Ind.
