Joe Lee wins GSY pace at the Big M

East Rutherford, NJ — Ten pacers went to the post for the fourth race on the Friday night (Nov. 15) card at The Meadowlands, a leg of the GSY Amateur Series.

With several horses leaving the gate hard for the lead, this made the first quarter go in a fast :27 for this amateur event. It wasn’t until the quarter pole where Tony Beltrami, driving Polak A, was able to wrestle the lead away from Roy Marohn, holding the lines of Maajaackkobe.

He sustained that lead until the top of the stretch but that is when the closers came calling. I’m An Athlete, sent off at 5-1 odds from the dreaded ten post, took the lead with Joe Lee in the bike and was able to draw off to a victory by 2-1/4 lengths.

It was the second consecutive week that this horse won in the amateur race, this time with a different pilot (Hannah Miller won last week). Samuel King drove Real Kid to a second place finish for the second week in a row. Bob Davis, sitting behind Bettor Spirits N, garnered the show dough. The mile was timed in 1:54.2.

This 9-year-old gelding is by Art Major, is trained by Michael Cruse and owned by Ronald Rettig-Zucchi.

The fifth leg will continue next weekend at the Big M with the first post slated for 7:15 p.m.
