John Bovi, 71, dies

Columbus, OH — John F. Bovi, 71, of Sherrill, N.Y., died Feb. 21, 2016, at the Oneida Healthcare Center surrounded by his wife and loving family.

Mr. Bovi was born April 25, 1944, in Rome, N.Y., the son of John and Elizabeth (Marchesino) Bovi. He was a graduate of Rome Free Academy and attended Austin Peay University on a football scholarship.

On Aug. 18, 1984, he was united in marriage to Patricia (Yerashunas) in Oneida, N.Y.

Prior to his retirement, Mr. Bovi was a mason and a proud member of the Brick Layers and Allied Craftsman Union Local #2.

For more than 40 years he owned, trained and drove Standardbreds at Vernon Downs and other race tracks across New York.

He was an avid golfer and a member of Crystal Springs Golf Course in Vernon. He was also a member of St. Helena’s Church of Sherrill, the USTA and the Harness Horse Association of Central New York.

Mr. Bovi is survived by his wife, Patricia; children, Dawn (John) Whittenmyer, Kevin (Kelly), Sara (Chad) Hollander, Jennifer (Gary) Corby and Jillian; grandchildren, Amanda Wittenmyer, Alyssa Wittenmyer and Addison Wittenmyer; mother, Elizabeth; twin brother, Michael; in-laws, Valerie (Joseph) Hodge, Florence Yerashunas, Paul Yerashunas and David Yerashunas; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
