Kelly Walker wins Michigan amateur race

by Patricia Miller, for GLADA

Hazel Park, MI — A new face and a new horse wrapped up a win on Monday (June 6) in the GLADA series at Hazel Park as Kelly Walker found his way to the winner’s circle, driving Tim Driver trainee Intell On Broadway.

Walker’s first appearance was an excellent one and he took the race home in 2:00.2. Mike Caston was right behind them with R M Shy for place and Jim Ingersoll came up for the show dough with his own Starry Lady.

Another hot June night, a perfect track, and nine serious competitors who followed the gate around to the start set the scene for the fifth race at Hazel Park.

Just before the starter yelled go, Patricia Miller’s Hay Look Out lived up to his name and broke and watched the race unfold from behind. At the quarter mark of :28.2, R M Shy took the lead, parking the eventual winner Intell On Broadway out in third. S F Fiesta, steered by Jack Pasco, raced on in second, and big winner Mark Jones moved his Thrill Of Victory up the outside in fourth.

R M Shy still cut the fractions for the lead, at the half in :58.4 and the three-quarters in 1:29.2, with a parked Intell On Broadway moving into second place.

As the race flashed around the final turn and headed for the money, a neck and neck battle played out to the finish with Intell On Broadway surging into the lead just before the wire, followed by race leader R M Shy and Starry Lady, who recovered from seventh to claim the show position.

The amateurs will return next Monday, June 13, for a rematch and more exciting competition.
