Larry Mulvey, 83, dies

Columbus, OH — Larry Woodrow Mulvey, 83, of Newton, Ill., died Nov. 10, 2020, at HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham, Ill.

Mr. Mulvey was born Aug. 26, 1937, in Jasper County, Ill., the son of Woodrow Wilson “Woody” and Mary Helen (Dale) Mulvey. He married Barbara Cooley on June 24, 1956, at First Baptist Church in Newton, Ill.

He graduated from Newton Community High School with the Class of 1955. He was a hard worker, first working at Newton Box and Basket Company and later Jasper Wood Products. He took this experience to establish Mulvey Wood products.

He began his law enforcement career with the Jasper County Sheriff’s office as a chief deputy, and served as Sheriff for a six-month term. He then went on to serve the City of Newton as an Officer. He was elected as Jasper County Sheriff two terms and retired after eight years of service.

Mr. Mulvey enjoyed raising and racing Standardbred horses with his family, particularly on the Illinois county fair race circuit.

He was a proud member of the Democratic Party. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, gardening, supporting the Chicago Cubs and taking the grandkids on Ranger rides. A much-adored Papaw, he would do about anything for his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. Even from the comfort of his home, he wanted play-by-play of all the great-grandkids sporting events.

His infectious smile and sense of humor will be truly missed by his family and close friends.

Mr. Mulvey is survived by his wife of 64 years, Barbara; children, Jeanie (Max) Massey, Carol (Jim Nix) Dooley, David (Beth) and Mark (Pam); grandchildren, Michelle (Terry) Hickman, Gary (Dorian) Massey, Tami (Ryan) Michl, Jared Finn, Allison (Anthony) Meinhart, Randall Dooley, Ross (Alex) Dooley, Melyssa (Ben) Borgic, Monyca (Toney), Mariyah (Kristin), and Lyndsey; great-grandchildren, Skyler Hickman, Nathaniel Hickman, Natalie Hickman, Noah Hickman, Emery Massey, Marissa Massey, Hunter Michl, Graci Michl, Marli Michl, Kinli Michl, Gavin Meinhart, Mabri Meinhart, Drew Anderson-Dooley, Kora Anderson-Dooley, Mackenzie Borgic, Camden Borgic, Jaxon Borgic, Emma Jones and Lily Jones; siblings, Ron (Joan), Bill (Diane), Paul (Celia), Sharon Romack, Jack (Judy), Betty Ganley, Barbara Mitchell and Sandy Pinter. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Marsha Finn Antonik; siblings, Delano, Mike and Rosemary; father-in-law, Dwight Cooley; mother-in-law, Vera Cooley; and step-mother-in-law, Lucile Cooley.

Private family services will be held, with burial in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Newton, Ill. Arrangements are under the care of the Meyer Funeral Home in Newton, Ill.
