Last call for Dewey Degree scholarship applicants

by Tim Bojarski, for the Upstate Chapter of the U.S. Harness Writer’s Association

Akron, NY — This week is your last chance to send in applications for the Dewey Degree College Scholarship, facilitated by the Upstate New York Chapter of the United States Harness Writers Association. The Deadline is Saturday, May 30, and all applications must be postmarked by that date.

The Dewey Degree is a fund that was started in 2008 through a contribution from Ray Schnittker in the name of his great trotter, Deweycheatumnhowe, and matched by Jeff Gural. It is an annual $1,500 stipend which will be given to one worthy candidate chosen by our selection committee, who is from a family actively involved in harness racing. There are no geographical restrictions so you don’t have to be from New York to qualify.

We have received many applications thus far, but are still accepting more. For all the details, please log onto www.upstatenyushwa.com. There you can download the complete application.

UNY-USHWA announces wheel raffle winner

A custom set of Stealth Racing Wheels was at stake in the fund raiser held to help support the efforts of the Upstate New York Chapter of the United States Harness Writers Association and the group drew its winner on Monday afternoon during Vernon Downs’ live card of racing.

When the winning ticket was pulled, the Southern Tier Harness Horsemen’s Association (STHHA) was the winner. They will receive their set of wheels shortly and we wish them the best of luck with them.

All the members of Upstate New York USHWA would like to thank John Cummings Jr. and Stealth Racing Wheels for their generous donation to the chapter, and also to everyone who purchased tickets during this promotion. Their support will help keep our activities on track and allow us to continue our work of promoting harness racing in the Empire State.
