Lee, Calabrese win Yonkers NAADA events

Yonkers, NY — Joe Lee and John Calabrese won their respective $10,000 North American Amateur Drivers Association trotting events on Thursday night (March 24) at Yonkers Raceway.

In the first event, Lee and Makin Trouble K showed the way through a :29 quarter, and the pair remained comfortable on an unchallenged lead through middle fractions of :59.4 and 1:29.4. When they headed for home, Raceace (Alan Schwartz) and Winneress (Tony Verruso) joined the fray. The three trotters were heads apart at the finish line, but Makin Trouble K dug in to prevail by a head in 2:00.3. Raceace and Winneress were second and third, respectively.

In the other division, Calabrese and Dark Pool took their time early, eight lengths behind early leader Jimmy Dean (Verruso) through a :28 first quarter. Going to the :59 half, Calabrese angled Dark Pool off the pylons to move toward the lead, and they gained the lead over a tiring Jimmy Dean past three-quarters in 1:29.1 before drawing off to win by 2-3/4 lengths in 1:59.4. Pilgrim Caviar (Lee) rode live cover and rallied for second; Jake Stillwell and Cyclone Maximus garnered third.

Both NAADA races were conducted as non-wagering events prior to the betting card.
