Lee returns to the winner’s circle at Big M

East Rutherford, NJ — With the temperatures changing from springtime to feel fall-like, the amateur pacers and drivers took to the track on Friday night (April 2) in the fifth race on the card at The Meadowlands.

There was a patented speed duel to the quarter-and half-mile and several horses had tough trips outside for the entire race. This is what makes amateur racing exciting and frustrating, but most importantly unpredictable. The events also provide good betting opportunities.

Jerrytone (John Calabrese) went to the lead at the quarter pole and looked like he was letting James Foley aboard Cashncam get to the front before the half (:27.3 and :56), but he could never clear. This resulted in an outer log jam with several horses going the long journey for the entire mile.

Pocket-sitter Rockinwiththebest (Joe Lee), was biding his time and in the stretch, once he had clearance, charged home to win by 2-1/2 lengths. May I Cruise West(Mark Schullstrom) came from mid-pack and closed well for second while the pace setter, Jerrytone, hung on for third. The mile went in a moderate 1:55.3.

The 8-year-old gelding is out of the mare Best Place and is by Rockin Image. He is owned and trained by Brandon Mongiello.

The GSY Amateurs returns on next Friday night’s card with a regular event with a purse of $10,500. The first post is scheduled for 6:20 p.m.
