Legislative race held at Farmington Fair

from the Maine Harness Horsemen’s Association

Augusta, ME — The Farmington (Maine) Fair has always been a fair of first. They were the first fair to award racing blankets in the winner’s circle and they were the first to take out their hub rail. On Tuesday (Sept. 22), they were the first to hold a Legislative race.

Senate Majority Leader Garrett Mason and Charlene Cushing won with Shady Touch.

Four Maine senators had the opportunity to experience what many harness racing fans could only dream of. They put on racing colors, got in their jog carts and headed out on the track. Fans were lined up along the fence cheering as each senator and driver pair was introduced.

After they did their warm-ups, the wings of the starting gate opened and the starter called the field to post. At the half they were in single file, cruising by the grandstand. Once they hit the front stretch for the second time, they were all pushing their horses toward the finish.

Senate Majority Leader Garrett Mason and Charlene Cushing won with Shady Touch. Senator Tom Saviello and Steve Wilson came in second with A Place Out West. Coming in third was Senator David Woodsome with Philip Bo Sowers and Malek Hanover. Rounding out the field was Senator Baker and driver Battista Negri and Snuff Box.

It was a classic celebration in the winner’s circle with a blanket presentation.

A special thank you goes out to Charlene and Mike Cushing in coordinating and planning this race.
