Little Grey Jug drawing interest but more pacers are needed

by John Manzi, publicity director, Monticello Raceway

Monticello, NY — According to Eric Warner, Monticello Raceway’s Director of Racing, he is getting inquiries about the upcoming 20th annual Little Grey Jug, the race for grey or roan-colored pacers only, which is slated to go to post on Monday afternoon, September 27.

“I have already heard from Nick Surrick, Jeff Deslandes, Kerry Young, Richie Arnold, and Jimmy Salerno and they all are interested in racing their pacers in our grey race,” Warner said. “We have a few greys on the grounds, too, but in order to get a competitive field I could use some more entries. And if we get enough (entries) we’ll go with two grey races and call the other the Little Grey Mug.”

Though the Little Grey Jug will be contested on September 27 the entry box for that event, and all other races that day, closes at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, September 22.

“We have a five-day (entry) box for all our Monday programs and though our Little Grey Jug is set for Monday, September 27, trainers will have to decide if they want to enter by Wednesday, September 22,” Warner added.

Warner said that the Little Grey Jug could go for a $7,500 purse if the horses entered are of good caliber; the lesser caliber field would probably race for around $5,000.

Anyone with a grey or roan-colored pacer interested in competing in the grey races is urged to contact Warner at Monticello Raceway by calling 845.794.4100, ext. 557. Or they can call the track’s publicity office at ext. 455.
