Monticello, NY — Monticello Raceway’s Little Grey Jug was initiated during the 1990 season and since then the race for grey colored pacers has became an annual event at the Catskill Mountain oval. On Tuesday (September 20) the 21st edition will be presented and the pacers will race for the biggest purse in the history of the series.
“In the past the Little Grey Jugs were raced for a $5,000 purse, but this season we will be offering a $10,000 purse,” noted Eric Warner, Monticello Raceway’s director of racing. “By offering a bigger purse we hope to attract a solid field of grey-colored pacers. However, should we also get a field of lesser caliber pacers they’ll race in the Little Grey Mug; and the purse will be adjusted accordingly.”
Currently Warner has heard from trainer Nick Surick who wants to enter Jaguar Jet. The veteran pacer was victorious in the Grey Jug last year when Zeke Parker hustled him home in a time of 2:01.1 over a very muddy racetrack.
Warner has also heard from Freddy Collazo and Mike Kimelman. Collazo would like to start Get Well while Kimelman has Lilly Whites ready to go.
“We have a few local greys competing here, but we still need more grey or roan colored pacers in order to present the events,” Warner added.
Anyone who would like to enter their grey pacer in the Mighty M’s Little Grey Jug they can do so by contacting Warner in the race office by calling 845.794.4100, ext. 557; or if they want more information they are urged to call the track’s publicity department at ext. 455.
