Longshots prevail in twin features at Dover

by Marv Bachrad, publicity director, Dover Downs

Dover, DE — A pair of longshots, 40-1 Yogi Bare and 23-1 Diamond Revenge, lit up the tote board in the $20,000 twin feature races at Dover Downs on Sunday, March 18. Tony Morgan drove four winners and Tim Tetrick had a triple.

Tim Curtin drove Jeff Bartels’ 40-1 Yogi Bare from last to first in the stretch to win a $20,000 Delaware Winners Over Pace in 1:53.1. It was the second win in a row and the third in his last four starts for the Rambaran gelding. Im A Rustler Too, with Tony Morgan, was second. The photo finish camera could not separate pacesetter Village Blitz (Tim Tetrick) and Wardog Hall (Ross Wolfenden) as they finished in a dead heat for show honors.

Last week the two top Delaware pacers now racing were caught in fast last half fractions and finished off the board in the $37,500 Preferred. Boy Oh Boy Stable’s Dream Rocket drew the rail with Ross Wolfenden driving. Beware Beret, owned by Erika and John Paradee, with Brandon Givens, and L & L DeVisser’s Gold Dust Beach, with David Miller, second last Monday, are the contenders from the inside posts.

The Cheyenne Gang’s Cheyenne Hollywood, teamed with Brian Sears, steps up after an Open win two weeks ago, Jerome Voldock’s PH Top Dog, with Ron Pierce in the bike, returns after racing well with two wins at the Meadowlands, and Redford Hall, piloted by Tony Morgan, makes his first start for Lloyd Arnold after winning two of the last three Invitational paces at Freehold.

In the $35,000 Delaware Special, Poppy Lustre N, a nine-time winner this meet, twice in the Del. Special, is handicapped with post 7 with Tim Tetrick driving for owners Ricky Pryor and Wendy Crissman. Marjorie Richards’ Clinton Longshot closed to within a head, finishing second, last time out. For the third straight week, Kovach Stables’ Art Director finished third. David Miller will drive him from the rail.

Virginia Louthan’s Wrangler Sam, after three straight wins, steps up in class and will be driven by Tony Morgan. Bonnie Allen and Brenda Harper’s Prince Of Luck will be driven by Ross Wolfenden. The other starters are Paul McDougall and WJ McDougall Racing’s Thin Blue Line, with Brad Hanners, and Erika Paradee’s Black Cat Bone, reined by Ron Pierce.

Ken Wood’s Ross The Boss N wired the field from the rail last week in the Open with Roger Plante in the bike, and along with Dan and Tom Courtemanche’s Bobnoxious, with Tim Curtin, and Blutstein, Donahue, Vitale and Sackheim’s Wattie N, handled by Brad Hanners, each a winner last week, lead eight to post in the $27,500 Open pace.

Mildred Ventriglio’s Quick And Deadly starts from post four with Tony Morgan, after just missing by a neck in last week’s Open, with Tom Ceraso and John Giumarra’s Coldheartedrevenge, piloted by Brandon Givens, third. Tom Kelly’s Print It closed with a rush to win a $21,000 Winners Over pace two weeks ago.

The rest of the highly competitive field include Scott Dillon’s Artchie Andrews, with Brian Sears from post one, and Anita Fialkow’s Nvincibl Artist, with David Miller driving.
