MacDonald surpasses C$50 million

Milton, ON — Canada’s leading driver James MacDonald reached the major career milestone of C$50 million in career earnings on Thursday evening (Sept. 8) at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

Entering Thursday’s card just over C$4,000 away from the milestone, MacDonald guided 2-year-old pacing filly Dewitt This Moment to a 20-1 upset in the fourth race to surpass the C$50-million mark. Dewitt This Moment is owned by Paul Ritchie and trained by Jim Ritchie.

A resident of Guelph, Ont., MacDonald is currently on pace to lead the nation in wins and earnings for a second consecutive year.

MacDonald drove the winners of C$7.5 million in 2021 on his way to earning a first O’Brien Award as Canada’s Driver of the Year. He is currently trending towards eclipsing that number, sitting at C$6.4 million for 2022 with over a quarter of the season remaining.

Along with his nation leading numbers, MacDonald is also on pace to capture his second consecutive Woodbine driving title. He currently holds a near 60-win lead with 259 victories.

The next milestone on MacDonald’s radar is 3,000 wins, as Thursday’s milestone victory was win number 2,933 for the Prince Edward Island native.
