Magic Swan wins NJSS trotting title

by Leon Zimmerman, for the New Jersey Sire Stakes

Magic Swan, a gelded son of Enjoy Lavec, trotted to the mile in 1:58.1 to win the $85,000 New Jersey Sire Stakes Championship Final for three-year-old trotting colts and geldings at Freehold Raceway on September 9.

With Hall of Fame driver Catello Manzi in the sulky, Magic Swan overtook the leaders in the stretch to win by a half length over Get Packin, as Armbro Copenhagen finished a length and a quarter back in third. Clearaway, who led from the start into the stretch, faded to fourth.

It was the fourth victory in 11 starts this year for Magic Swan, who is trained by Jeffrey Long, a co-owner with James Harris and J. Paul Long. The trotter’s career earnings rose to $236,642 with the $42,500 winner’s share of the purse.
