Mark Jones strikes again in GLADA series

by Patricia Miller, for GLADA

Hazel Park, MI — Classic Spur and driver Mark Jones raced out of the five hole, took the lead, and finished the race in fine style, this time with two tires intact and a big smile on his face. He won for the second week in a row in the GLADA race on Monday (May 16) at Hazel Park, driving to victory in 2:00.3. No spurs were needed for this big win.

The amateurs had a cold evening but the excitement of the competition warmed them up as well as the crowd in the stands. As the gate folded, Al McCardell moved his one hole trotter Heart Attach out smartly but couldn’t snatch the top from Donker Marie piloted by Kara Sue Buxton, and Starry Lady, steered by Jim Ingersoll, both close on the heels of Classic Spur.

Steve Oldford slammed the pedal to the metal and drove Smokin Steven up the outside from the eight hole start to chase the leaders at the :28.4 quarter pole. Benns Legacy, driven by Mike Sweeney, dropped back to eighth, while Travlin Butch with Bob Miller in the bike slipped into the seven hole and Michael Mitchell pushed Miss Tiger Lily up the outside into sixth place.

By the half, in a fast :58.3, Classic Spur and Smokin Steven were one and two, a replay of last week’s finish. Donker Marie came on as Benns Legacy faded.

At the three-quarter pole, Classic Spur trotted on and Starry Lady made a race of it, coming up fast just ahead of Donker Marie. But as the finish line loomed ahead, Smokin Steven roared back into second place, just ahead of Starry Lady and Donker Marie. As the light flashed and the camera caught the action, a revived Benns Legacy won the show money and Kara Sue Buxton finished fourth with Donker Marie.

With the second race in the books, and a proud and happy Mark Jones enjoying his second win, the other competitors promised renewed effort and faster work next week to win the race for themselves.
