Maryland 2022 racing dates announced

Towson, MD — Rosecroft Raceway and Ocean Downs Casino will offer a combined 107 live racing programs in 2022 under requests recently approved by the Maryland Racing Commission.

Rosecroft, operated by the Maryland Jockey Club, was approved for 60 dates, while Ocean Downs received 47 under its request. The two tracks also were approved by the MRC for year-round simulcasting operations.

Based on preliminary calendars, live harness racing will be held continuously except for about four weeks of downtime in late December and early January.

The Rosecroft 2022 schedule is split into two parts, with 33 programs for the winter/spring meet (Jan. 19-May 21) and 27 for the fall meet (Sept. 18-Dec. 18). For the most part, live racing will be held Wednesdays and Sundays with a first post time of 7:15 p.m.

From January through March, which the MJC classifies as the “winter meet,” the only exception is Sunday (Feb. 13), which is a dark day because of the Super Bowl. For the remainder of the meet, a preliminary schedule has Easter Sunday (April 17) as a dark day with the program moved to Monday (April 18). In May, racing is planned on two Triple Crown Saturdays — May 7 for the Kentucky Derby and May 21 for the Preakness Stakes — with Sundays dark.

Ocean Downs, owned and operated by Churchill Downs Inc., is scheduled to race from May 29-Sept. 7, according to the MRC submission. The track applied for 44 racing programs for 2021.
