Matron Stakes highlight Dover Downs’ opening week

Dover, DE — During the opening festivities at Dover Downs next week, five of the track’s nine stakes events are scheduled.

Next Thursday (Nov. 5) four Matron 2-year-old stakes will be raced on the card. The following Thursday (Nov. 12) the spotlight will shine on four Matron Stakes for 3-year-old pacers and trotters.

The Nov. 5 Matron freshman events includes the $217,500 (est.) colt and gelding trot while the male pace features a $189,000 (est.) purse. The filly divisions boast a $173,000 (est.) pace and a $170,000 (est.) trot. Those purses usually grow higher based on the number of participants.

For those supplementing to a 2-year-old final, the declaration fee is $20,000.

Also on that Thursday, the 2015 Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund series for 2-year-olds begins with the $20,000 first of two preliminary legs.

Later in November, the track’s signature event, the $400,000 Hap Hansen Progress Pace, will again feature the top sophomores in the sport with $35,000 eliminations on Monday (Nov. 23) preceding a $300,000 (est.) final on Nov. 30.

Dover Downs live racing is featured Monday through Thursday with a 4:30 p.m. post time. There is no live racing on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
