Max “Mick” N. Shaw dies

Columbus, OH — Max “Mick” N. Shaw, age 78, of Lyons, passed away early Friday morning, March 16, 2012 at The Fulton County Health Center in Wauseon. He was born July 30, 1933 in Wauseon to the late Cloid Shaw and Prudence (Keaser) Shaw.

Mick was a standout athlete at Lyons High School; where he excelled in basketball and baseball. He was named All Toledo Blade in 1953 in basketball and held the Lyons High School all-time scoring record until 1964. Mick later went on to play basketball and baseball with the federation league while in the military with the U.S Army from 1953 to 1962. He was an electrician by trade working for OK Electric in Wauseon before being self-employed.

Mick trained harness racing horses for over 40 years from 1970 to present at the Fulton County Fairgrounds. Several of his accomplishments included more than 360 career wins as an owner and trainer; highlighted by being inducted into the Northwest Ohio Harness Racing Assoc. Hall of Fame in 2011.

Mick served on the Lyons Village Council for many years and Lyons Mayor for eight years. He attended First Baptist Church in Wauseon and was a member of the Wauseon Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite.

Mick was preceded in death by his first wife, Carol A. Shaw in 2000; brothers, Don, Wayne “Red” and Glen “Chub” Shaw and sisters, Erva Jean LeGall and Eleanor Morel. He is survived by his second wife, Carol A. (Hochstetler) Shaw; sons, Greg (Lori) Shaw of Lyons, Todd (Joyce) Shaw of Toledo and Bentley (Trisha) Shaw of Sand Creek, MI; sister, Dorothy “Dottie” (Jack) Hartsell; step-children, Mark (Peggy) Green, Hal (fiancée Wilma) Green, Gar (Kenzi) Green and Julie (Mark) Pauken; grandchildren, Neil and Kyle Shaw, Allison Schlicher, Angie Shroyer, Erica, Brett, Tiffany and Brendan Shaw; step-grandchildren, Tyler (Sucheta) Green, Courtney Green, Rachel (Tony) Morrison, Silas and Lucas Green, Eric (Jenny) Ferris and Matthew, Lisa and Andy Ferris; great grandchildren, Cameron and Ayden Schlicher and Tyler and Cale Shroyer; and step-great grandchildren; Zayden Morrison and Donavan Ferris.

Friends will be received from 2-8 PM on Sunday, March 18, 2012 at Barnes Funeral Chapel, 5825 St. Hwy. 109 in Delta; where a funeral service celebrating Mick’s life will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday. Pastors Ron Shipley and Mary Burroughs will be officiating. Interment will follow at Lyons Cemetery in Lyons, OH.
