Meadows Monday Memo: Jan. 16

Washington, PA — Every Monday, Hollywood Casino at The Meadows broadcaster Jeff Zidek issues a capsule of statistics and other pertinent information on racing at the western Pennsylvania track. The Jan. 16 edition of the Meadows Monday Memo follows:

Racing Schedule: We remain in our winter three-day-per-week racing schedule, Wednesday through Friday afternoons, at 12:45 p.m. This schedule will remain in place through the end of March.

Larger Fields: Field sizes at The Meadows continue to trend upward. For the two cards drawn so far for this week (Wednesday and Thursday), the average field size is 8.92. Three races each day — all of which offer a pentafecta – feature 10-horse fields, starting nine-wide with a trailer.

Top 3 Drivers Remain the Same: Drivers Dave Palone, Ronnie Wrenn Jr and Jeremy Indof remained in the top three spots among drivers through last week. Palone (19), Wrenn (13) and Indof (10) lead the way in victories. Both Palone (.414) and Wrenn (.406) are above the .400 mark in the Universal Driver Rating System.

Currie, Sokol Off to Fast Start: Trainer Stacey Currie, who moved her base of operations near The Meadows late in the fall, is off to a fast start this season among trainers. She is third in wins behind Ron Burke (10) and Dirk Simpson (8), but Currie’s five wins have come in just 12 starts. Her UTRS rating is .472. Trainer Sandy Sokol is also off to a quick start for the year, winning three of six starts with a UTRS of .593.

Filling the Entry Box: Trainers Burke and Simpson, along with Scott Betts, have been helping to keep The Meadows entry box full. Burke, who traditionally leads the way in number of starts, has sent 33 to the gate so far this year, but both Simpson and Betts have raced 30+ starters as well.
