Michigan amateurs set for second year of competition

by Patricia Miller, for GLADA

Hazel Park, MI — Members of the Great Lakes Amateur Drivers Association will take to the track on Monday evenings this summer, bringing the excitement, fun and competition of its members to race fans, families and friends. The first night of racing will be May 9 so “horse up!” as GLADA President Steve Oldford likes to say.

The conditions will be the same as last year: Michigan owned or bred trotters that are non-winners of $2,400 last six or $2,800 last seven with age allowances. Also, they must be non-winners of $12,000 in 2011 or optional $7,500 claimers with allowances. Drivers are encouraged to find their own horses for the meet, but help will be given to those in need.

In addition to the glory of winning one of the weekly carded races, the overall winner of the series, based on points, will get to represent GLADA at the annual Tim Fouts Memorial Race at the Delaware County Fair in Ohio.

These races are hotly contested and the excitement crackles as the drivers pull behind the gate and trot on to the start. The amateur races last season were very popular with the bettors and eagerly anticipated by drivers, fans and bettors. Come on down, get your horse, check that your A or P license is valid (no F and Q licenses), wash up those colors, and hit the track trotting.
