Microchip identification now effective in Ohio

Columbus, OH — Governor Mike DeWine signed an Executive Order on May 23, 2019 permitting the use of microchips as a means to identify racehorses — Standardbred, Thoroughbred and Quarter Horses — who are entered to race at any of Ohio’s seven racetracks, as well as at the Buckeye State’s county fairs.

“This Executive Order will ensure that the Ohio State Racing Commission will be able to uphold the integrity of racing by identifying horses using the most updated technology,” Bill Crawford, Executive Director of the Ohio State Racing Commission acknowledged.

With Governor DeWine’s Executive Order racehorses can now be identified by tattoo, freeze brand or microchip.

“Racetrack personnel will be equipped with microchip readers in order to facilitate the proper identification of those horses with microchips,” Crawford added.
