Minore, Calabrese win NAADA splits at Yonkers

Yonkers, NY — Paul Minore and John Calabrese were victorious in Thursday’s (Aug. 12) North American Amateur Driving Association events at Yonkers Raceway, steering Keystone Blade and Dark Pool, respectively, to victory in their $8,000 non-wagering trotting events.

In the first division, Minore, subbing for owner Joe Pennacchio, used a good journey to score a 1-1/4-length victory with Keystone Blade.

Scott Kepler hustled Judge Ken to the lead, and they showed the way by the quarter in :28.1 and past the half in :58.1. Minore was first to move, and he rallied Keystone Blade to the lead as the field headed to three-quarters. Once on top, Minore played “catch me if you can,” and no one could as the Yankee Glide gelding coasted to victory. Stealing (Matt Zuccarello) finished second; Winneress (Tony Verruso) garnered third.

Dark Pool, who has raced well for Calabrese in the past, stepped up again for him with a come-from-behind 2:00.4 victory in the second event.

Minore gunned If I Must to the lead, and they showed the way to the top of the lane before folding badly and finishing seventh. Makin Trouble K and Joe Lee shadowed the leader throughout, but when Calabrese and Dark Pool keept coming, they had no defense as the veteran Cantab Hall gelding rallied from fifth to collar Makin Trouble K by a neck. Joe Faraldo finished third with Momm’s My Dad.
