Mohawk Video: Coleman talks about Sportswriter’s retirement

Campbellville, ON — It was recently announced that North America Cup champion Sportswriter has been retired due to a training injury.

The 3-year-old son of Artsplace took a record of 1:48.3 and earned more than $1.5 million for owners Steve Calhoun, West Wins Stable and Southwind Farms. In addition he also won the $920,000 Metro Pace at Mohawk Racetrack.

The Woodbine Entertainment media department recently caught up with trainer and co-owner Casie Coleman to discuss the announcement.

“He hurt his front left tendon and it really wasn’t that bad. We took him to Dr. Dan McMaster’s and basically he told us that he needs six weeks off and two months of training, so we thought we could hit the Breeders Crown but then we had a call from Pepper Tree Farm in Australia to stand him at stud,” Coleman told the WEG media department.

Coleman also discussed her banner group of rookie prospects for this season.
