More top national stars win qualifiers at Pocono Thursday

Wilkes-Barre PA — National-caliber horses continuing their preparations for their 2013 campaigns again put on impressive shows in Thursday morning qualifiers at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs.

Economy Terror, 2011 juvenile filly champ and double world record-setter in capturing PA Sire Stakes Championships here at 2 and 3, won her second straight qualifier. This week she was put on the engine by driver Jim Morrill, Jr. for trainer Chris Oakes, coming home in the fastest clocking of the session, 1:52.4, while photoing promising sophomores Ronny Bugatti and Track Master D.

Another 2012 PA Sires champion, the 3-year-old trotting filly Frau Blucher, brought a smile to her connections and fans of Cloris Leachman by making her first trip behind the gate in 2013 an easy triumph in 1:56.4, with identical back splits of :29 for the Morrill Jr./Oakes connection.

To finish the Pennsylvania Sires theme, Dovuto Hanover was favored in the 2-year-old pacing colt finale last year but had a luckless uncovered trip as the favorite; today he had no such trouble on his return to the Keystone State, racing on the engine and finishing in 1:57.3, with Morrill again in the bike. Ryan Maxwell is the trainer of 2012’s fastest freshman on a five-eighths-mile track.

Beer Summit chugged along in the pocket past a 1:00 half, then burst from the hole and threw successive personal quarters of :28 and :27.2 to be the day’s fastest trotter with a 1:55.3 tally. Andrew McCarthy handled the sulky spot for trainer Noel Daley’s Goodtimes winner from last year.

McCarthy was also behind Dynamic Youth, the 2012 Cane Pace winner and major late-season factor among the top sophomores, as he made a two-move journey a winning one in 1:53.2, last quarter :27.1, for trainer Aaron Lambert.
