Movin’ On Up surges; Sprocket equals Dover track record

Dover, DE — After stalking a blistering pace, David Hamm and Rodney Long’s Movin’ On Up ($18.40) got the big piece of the pie in Thursday’s (Feb. 10) $27,500 Blue Hen/Open Handicap Pace at Dover Downs, using an explosive :26.1 final-quarter burst to spring an 8-1 upset.

Rose Run Uriah protected the early lead from post three, seating Penzance Hanover and Movin’ On Up in second and third, respectively, through a :26.2 first quarter and tearing through middle fractions of :54.2 and 1:22.2.

On the far turn, Art Stafford Jr., driving Penzance Hanover, sensed that Rose Run Uriah was tiring, so he angled Penzance Hanover out of the pocket to briefly lead in upper stretch, only to be eclipsed by Movin’ On Up and Tim Tetrick, who lifted clear by 1-1/4 lengths to win in 1:49.1. Tarkio (Allan Davis), the 3-2 favorite, rallied into third, four farther lengths behind.

On the undercard, Sprocket equaled the Dover Downs track record for older pacing geldings with a 1:48.2 score in a $40,000-$50,000 claiming handicap. Pat Berry drove the 7-year-old Sportswriter gelding for trainer Traci Berry and owner Edwin Gannon Jr.

George Napolitano Jr. recorded a driving triple on the 13-race card.

Racing at Dover Downs continues on Monday (Feb. 14) with a $2,761.82 carryover in the final-race pentafecta. First post is 4:30 p.m.
