Muscle Babe wins third straight with OSS score

from the Ontario Sires Stakes

Campbellville, ON — The 3-year-old trotting fillies were in the spotlight on Monday night (June 16) at Mohawk Racetrack in two $96,600 Ontario Sires Stakes Gold divisions. The splits were captured by Muscle Babe and a distinctive looking filly with a white blaze on her face named White Becomes Her.

The second and fastest division saw last year’s leader in this division, Riveting Rosie, as the early leader from post six and she clicked by the opening quarter in :26.4. Tosca came up to challenge and had a head in front by the :55.3 half but could not get by Riveting Rosie.

Just as quickly as Riveting Rosie repelled that rival, she had another one in Muscle Babe who came three wide for James MacDonald and trotted by the leader just past the 1:24.2 third quarter and opened up through the lane to win by five lengths in 1:53.3. Miss Liv got up for second while Riveting Rosie held for third.

The time represents a new life mark for Muscle Babe, and her third consecutive victory for trainer Dave Menary and owner/breeder Kjell Andersen of Norway. A daughter of Muscle Mass whose dam is former OSS star Oaklea Odessa, Muscle Babe increased her 2014 earnings to $141,812 from just four starts.

In the first division Margie grabbed early control for Sylain Filion and led her rivals past the opening quarter in :27.3. Heavy favorite Danica and Chris Christoforou came calling and took over the lead before the :56.2 half and maintained that position by the 1:25.2 third panel.

However down the stretch Mario Baillargeon had White Becomes Her in full gear and swept past to win in 1:54.1. Danica was right there for second while Margie grabbed the show spot.

The time knocked more than three seconds off White Becomes Her’s previous best time taken just last month at Mohawk. Trained by Baillargeon’s brother Ben for owner Vince Mastrangelo, the daughter of Angus Hall was scoring her second win in five attempts this season and upped her career earnings to $101,523.

Bred by Peninsula Farm and Valley High Stable, White Becomes Her is the fourth foal from a half-sister to one of Angus Hall’s most successful daughters, Elusive Desire, a winner of $1.27 million during her career.

The next Gold event for these girls is slated for July 2 at Grand River Raceway while their Grassroots counterparts are in action at Mohawk Tuesday evening.
