NJ horsemen to get $20 million racing appropriation

Columbus, OH – John Brennan of njonlinegambling.com reports that a N.J. Senate bill introduced on Monday (June 21) includes $5 million for N.J. horsemen as part of more than $100 million in “supplemental appropriations” from the state’s General Fund.

In 2019, a state law was passed that provided $20 million annually to supplement purses.  However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic last year, it was slashed to $15 million, which was carried over to this year’s budget and approved by lawmakers on Thursday (June 24).  The Senate’s supplemental appropriation returns the annual total to the original level of $20 million.

“The entire package is supposed to be signed into law by next week’s annual deadline by Gov. Phil Murphy, who already has reached an agreement with state Democratic lawmakers on such budget details,” according to Brennan.
