Ned Galentine, 80, dies

Columbus, OH — Austin E. “Ned” Galentine, 80, of Greenwood, Del., died May 30, 2012, after a short stay at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford.

Born in Amesbury, Mass., he was the son of the late Paul Guy Galentine and Bessie Noyes Galentine Clukey.

Mr. Galentine served with the 2nd Infantry Division in the US Army during the Korean War in 1951 and 1952 and continued serving until June 1954. He was a member of the Korean War Veterans Alliance.

Upon returning to the United States he began his harness racing career with his stepfather, Henry Clukey. His career spanned more than three decades, racing at harness tracks throughout the East Coast, New England and Canada. He was a Standardbred owner, trainer and driver.

His love of training and racing trotters led him to an upset victory over his longtime friend Stanley Dancer’s horse, Super Bowl, with Mr. Regal during Grand Circuit week at Brandywine Raceway in 1971.

He remained a member of the United States Trotting Association for more than 60 years.

He retired from the sulky in August 1981 to embrace a position in the judges’ stand. With his longtime knowledge and love of harness racing he quickly became Presiding Judge for the Delaware and Maryland race tracks, Dover Downs, Brandywine, Harrington Raceway and Ocean Downs. Prior to his retirement he was Presiding Judge for Rosecroft Raceway in Ft. Washington, Md.

He was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church in Milford, Del.

Mr. Galentine is survived by his loving companion of 30 years, Susan Stamper; son, Daniel E.; daughter, Peni G. (Melville) Warren; grandchildren, Austin Chase Warren and Robert Cameron Warren; and nephews, Dr. Paul, Blade, David and Chad. He was preceded in death by his brother, Brigadier General Paul G.

A memorial service will be held Saturday (June 9) at 11 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 200 Church Street, Milford, DE 19963. Interment will be private at Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington, Del., at a later date.
