New York County Fair Finals at Monticello

Monticello, NY — Monticello Raceway concluded its 2019 stakes program with the New York County Fair Finals on Thursday (Sept. 5). Eight events, each worth $10,000, highlighted the 10-race card.

2-Year-Old Trotting Fillies

The heavy 3-5 favorite Comaway With Me got the lead past the quarter-mile marker in 31 after a brief tussle with Notoutofthewoods. Comaway With Me cut the rest of the mile and had a three-length lead in the middle of the stretch, but made a break. Notoutofthewoods inherited the lead and won by 5-1/4 lengths over Im A Chole and Don’t Call Me Crazy in 2:04.1.

It was the fourth win of the season and a new lifetime mark for the daughter of Prayer I Am and Edge Of The Woods. She was driven by Mark Whitcroft for owner-trainer Cheryl Whitcroft.

2-Year-Old Trotting Colts and Geldings

Discus Hanover (Credit Winner-Dancing Flames) brought a six-race win streak into Monticello after competing in both the Excelsior B class and the county fairs during the summer. The 1-5 favorite went to the front and never looked back after cutting fractions of :30, 1:00.3 and 1:31.2 to draw off by 13 lengths and win in 2:01.4. Step Forward finished second, followed by Simonthediamond.

Former Monticello Raceway driving champion Jim Devaux was in the sulky for owners Philip Hale and David Dewhurst. It was the 10th win of the year for Discus Hanover in 13 starts.

2-Year-Old Pacing Fillies

Xenia’s Chip started from the rail in the eight-horse field and was hustled to the front by Greg Merton. The Heston Blue Chip-Xenia Hanover filly cruised to an easy 6-1/2 length win in a lifetime best 1:59.2 over K J Natalia and Roll On The Odds.

Xenia’s Chip scored her fourth win of the years for owner Keith Pinkowski and trainer Jim Graham.

2-Year-Old Pacing Colts and Geldings

Favorite Art Nukem crossed over from post seven for driver Mike Simons and cut the mile to the half in :58.3. Flow With Joe and driver Claude Huckabone Jr. were first to move past the half, and they took over at the three-quarter marker before pacing away to win in 1:59.

Flow With Joe (Roll With Joe–Hidden Play), trained by Jody Weidman, increased his impressive resume to seven wins in eight lifetime starts.

3-Year-Old Trotting Fillies

Tyler Buter rushed Lindy In The Sky away from the gate from post eight to lead a :29.3 first quarter, only for Reckless Image to take the lead away and score in 2:02.1 over Lindy In The Sky and Smokin On By.

Reckless Image, a daughter of Muscle Mass and Image Hall, won for the 11th time this season for David Dewhurst and Philip Hale. It was the second win of the afternoon for Dewhurst and driver Jim Devaux.

3-Year-Old Trotting Colts and Geldings

Going into the first turn, four colts made breaks. Certify was able to steer clear of the commotion and eased his way to the front. Once on top, he dictated fractions of :29.3, 1:00 and 1:29.4 to win by 6-3/4 lengths in 1:59.3 over Sanchez Rocks and Okay.

The gelded son of Credit Winner and Good Intentions earned his ninth win of the season and gave Tyler Buter a driving double on the card. Certify is owned and trained by Earl Sauve.

3-Year-Old Pacing Fillies

Roll With Mimi made short work in her class as she notched an impressive six-length victory over Pearlameri and Qing Qong Bluechip in 1:56.4. The daughter of Roll With Joe and Dream of Mimi earned her 15th win of the season in 28 starts with earnings of over $60,000 in her 3-year-old campaign.

Tyler Buter handled the driving duties for trainer Claude Huckabone Jr., who shares ownership with Robndot Ltd.

3-Year-Old Pacing Colts and Geldings

While the chalk prevailed for most of the day, Jericho Willie was the exception, sent off at odds of 18-1 from post five. Trainer Joe Chindano Jr. was aboard for the 1:57 wire-to-wire win, which was also a new lifetime mark. Hestons Lucky Chip finished second, followed by Johnny Chimpo.

Jericho Willie, a son of Rock N Roll Heaven and Taylorlane Diva, is owned by Larry Stalbaum and was bred by Gary Smith. He paid $39.60 to win.

A four-horse Racing Under Saddle event was won by Vanessa Karlewicz and Akhenaton in 2:09.1. Michelle Miller and Choke Hold finished second, followed by RCs Ready and Hilary Hartnett.
