Next Generation starts Friday

Columbus, OH — The Next Generation, a $150,000 race for each division of Ohio bred 2-year-olds, starts Friday (July 2) at Eldorado Scioto Downs. Both the 2-year-old filly trot (race eight) and the 2-year-old colt trot (race 10) have nine horse fields.

Moments Created (Creatine-Kt Pricelessmoment) is the slight morning line favorite at 2-1 leaving from the seven hole for the filly trot. Oftom (Long Tom-Mickey Lavec), leaving from post three, is not far behind and has early odds of 3-1.

Moments Created won both her qualifier (in 1:59) and her non-winners of one debut on June 28 in 1:58.2, both outings at Northfield Park. Edward Miller trains the filly for Rebecca Sugg and Watson Harness Racing. Kurt Sugg will drive.

Oftom (Anthony MacDonald) won her Scioto debut on June 24. Conrad photo.

Oftom has two qualifiers under her belt at Northfield, her best in 1:59.3. She then traveled to Scioto and won her non-winners of one race on June 24 in 1:58.1. Jason McGinnis trains the filly for Thestable Oftom Group. Anthony MacDonald will drive. Oftom was a $17,000 Ohio Selected Jug Sale purchase.

Voyageoficeandfire (Break The Bank K-Bon Voyage) is another McGinnis-MacDonald entrant and is the favorite for the colt trot division at 7-2 on the morning line. The $14,000 Ohio Selected Jug Sale purchase has both a qualifier and a start at Northfield Park, having been timed in 1:59 on June 20 for owners Thestable Voyagoficenfire.

Rose Run Xtra (Cash Hall-Anything But Love) sits at 9-2 for trainer Ron Burke, driver Chris Page and owners Burke Racing Stable, Hatfield Stables, Knox Services and Jason Melillo. The colt qualified at The Meadows twice before heading to Scioto to finish second to Oftom in his racing debut. He was also bought at the Ohio Selected Jug Sale with a $45,000 price tag.

No trotting sire dominates the entries on Friday, with nine stallions having progeny in the two races:

Break The Bank K – one colt
Cash Hall – one colt
Creatine – two fillies, one colt
Full Count – two colts
Long Tom – one filly
Triumphant Caviar – one filly, one colt
Uncle Peter – one filly
What The Hill – four fillies, two colts
Wishing Stone – one colt

The Next Generation required a nominator to purchase a spot for $10,000 by March 15, but the horse did not need to be declared until the box closed earlier this week. Spots could be sold or traded at any time, with written notification to the race office, up until the box closing. Three spots switched hands in each of the trotting divisions.

Follow @SciotoRacing and #ScDNextGen on Twitter as the conversation heats up about the four Next Generation divisions. Both pacing divisions will be held on Saturday (July 3).

On the wagering side, there is a $1,698 carryover for the 50-cent Player’s Pick-5, with a low 14 percent takeout, starting in race five for Friday night. Bettors are encouraged to keep an eye on the Scioto simulcast feed and Twitter account as there have been numerous instant carryovers this racing season.

Racing is held each Tuesday-Saturday, all with a 6:15 p.m. first post. Free program pages are available for each live race night on the Scioto Downs website.
