Nick Callahan injured in training accident

Dover, DE — Veteran trainer Nick Callahan has returned to his home in Greenwood, Del. following a weekend training accident and pelvis surgery.

Callahan was completing a training trip behind Tom’s Toy, a 4-year-old pacing mare recentty added to the stable. When coming around the final turn his sulky wheel ran over an obstruction with Callahan being ousted from his bike. He fell hard to the track, breaking his pelvis. He was rushed to Baltimore for surgery, which was deemed successful. Callahan was discharged and now will be sidelined for the next few weeks.

Callahan is currently eighth in the Dover Downs trainer standings with 30 wins and $330,195 in purse money. His son, Shaun, the stable’s second trainer, will take over the training duties. Another son, Corey, is the track’s leading driver and is ranked second in the North American dash-win standings.
