NJ Legislature passes expanded gaming bills

from the USTA Communications Department

Columbus, OH — The New Jersey State Assembly passed bills today to allow expanded Internet betting on horse races, set up exchange wagering and expand off-track betting.

According to a story on www.nj.com, the bills would allow Internet betting on New Jersey horse races for residents of other states; establish exchange wagering, in which bettors would wager against each other on the outcome of races; and expand the number of off-track betting parlors in the state.

Lawmakers in the State Senate and Assembly also approved placing a referendum on the November 2011 general election ballot asking voters whether they want to amend New Jersey’s Constitution by legalizing sports betting. However, even if voters approved, a federal ban on sports betting in all but four states would have to be repealed or overturned to make it legal in New Jersey.
