NJ Sire Stakes action headlines Freehold opening day

Freehold, NJ — Freehold Raceway is back in action this Friday (Aug. 30), with a 10-race program beginning at 12:30 PM (ET). The headliner is the $10,000 first leg of the New Jersey Sire Stakes for 2-year-old trotting fillies, scheduled as the fifth race.

The expected favorite is the Linda Toscano-trained filly Heart N Soul Deo, who has won four races from six starts in her brief career. She won legs of the Stallion Series at Harrah’s Philadelphia and The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono, and most recently finished third in the Reynolds at Tioga Downs. She will be driven by Brian Sears.

Other contenders in the field include Never Late Kait, a recent impressive maiden winner for Dawn Anderson; Conteparitro Deo, who recently finished second in the Stallion Series at Pocono for Team Miller; and Stella Kemp, an Åke Svanstedt trainee who finished third in the Tompkins at Tioga last out.

Friday’s card at Freehold also includes a $12,000 Preferred Handicap Trot, which will go as the eighth race. It drew a full field of eight, headlined by Sumatra, who won an upper-level conditioned trot at Yonkers Raceway two starts back. Marley’s Guy, who defeated Sumatra back in June, and Dot Dot Dot Dash, who won the Preferred at Freehold five times over the winter, also profile as contenders.
