Columbus, OH — New Jersey State Sen. Jim Whelan said on Tuesday that he will refuse to hear any recommendation that brings video lottery terminals to the state’s racetracks should it come before his influential Senate committee.

The Press of Atlantic City reported that Whelan stated his position in a letter to Gov. Chris Christie. The paper also reported that Whelan said he has the support of Senate President Stephen Sweeney.

“The governor comes across as a direct, blunt guy, and I decided to send a very direct, blunt letter so we’re not equivocating or leaving the door ajar,” the paper quoted Whelan as saying.

Whelan, a former mayor of Atlantic City who represents the Atlantic district which includes Atlantic City, is the chairman of the Senate Committee on State Government, Wagering, Tourism and Historic Preservation. The committee reviews legislation on wagering issues concerning the Atlantic City casinos, horse racing and video lottery terminals.

Whelan’s letter came in response to a report on Monday that quoted Christie saying he had not made a decision about allowing VLTs at the racetracks.

Christie has assembled an advisory commission that will look at gaming, sports and entertainment throughout the state and ultimately make policy recommendations by June 30.
