NJSS trotters back in action at Freehold Friday

Freehold, NJ — The New Jersey Sire Stakes continue at Freehold Raceway this Friday (Sept. 6), as two races for 2-year-old trotters will take center stage on an 11-race program.

The filly division drew a field of seven, and will go as the third race, with an approximate post time of 1:10 p.m. (EDT). Common Sense S, a two-time stakes winner, figures to be tough to beat. The daughter of Trixton-Opportunity is coming off an easy win in the Reynolds at Tioga Downs on Aug. 25, where she trotted a mile in an impressive 1:55.4. Trainer Ake Svanstedt will also drive his filly, who drew the inside post position.

Six out of the nine starters from last week’s first leg will return. The best of those figures to be Tricky Sister (Trixton-Pay Me Sister), who finished an even third at 8-1. She’ll leave from post position six, and will be driven by Dan Dube.

The division for colts and geldings also attracted seven trotters, and is scheduled as the sixth race, with a scheduled post time of 2:10 p.m. Barley (Trixton-Canoli), going out for the Nifty Norman barn, is the only member of the field who has won a pari-mutuel race. He was an impressive maiden winner on Aug. 29 at Harrah’s Philadelphia, prevailing by almost six lengths in 1:59. He’ll leave from post position six.

Barley’s primary challengers include Light Blue Movers (Ready Cash-Prinsessa), who qualified well at Harrah’s Philadelphia on Aug. 27, Sloanie (Trixton-Gillovny Hanover), who was in the midst of a big mile last out before breaking; and Newyork Newyork Deo (Chapter Seven-Doris Deo), a promising first-time starter for Team Andy and Julie Miller.

The colt and gelding division is part of the Pick-5, which features a carryover of $1,072.62. The carryover was triggered by a string of upsets Saturday, including Tie Your Shoe Ed’s 33-1 victory in race five, and the defeat of Rock Lights at 1-20 in race seven. Friday’s sequence begins in race five, with an approximate post time of 1:50 p.m. The wager is a 50-cent minimum bet.

The first race at Freehold on Friday is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
