Nuncio wins the Solvalla Grand Prix final

by Karsten Bønsdorf

Nuncio scored his 10th victory from 13 starts Saturday afternoon at Solvalla in the Solvalla Grand Prix final – a race for 4-year-old trotters raced over 1-5/16 mile.

From post position five Nuncio was forced three-wide around the first turn and driver Stefan Melander had to use him hard to get to the front, which he did after the half-mile mark.

Heading into the final turn another USA-born trotter, Daley Lovin driven by Erik Adielsson, came up outside of Nuncio and the two battled it out.

Though Daley Lovin was very game, he could not go by Nuncio, who won by a length in 1.56.1f (mile rate) followed by Daley Lovin. The winner’s share of the purse was $46,000. In 2016 Nuncio has earned $415,000 in Sweden.

Nuncio most likely will not be headed to the 2016 Prix d’Amerique, but another Swedish-owned, USA-bred trotter Delicious, a 6-year old mare, has been flying and no matter the distance, she will be a contender.

Delicious, driven by Ôrjan Kihlström, won the Gold Division yesterday timed in 1.57.1f (mile rate). It was her fourth victory in a row.
