Ohio Sires Stakes dominate Northfield Sunday program

by Kimberly Rinker, OSDF Administrator

Northfield, OH — A total of 111 freshman Ohio-bred distaffs filled the Northfield Park entry box this week, with 14 Ohio Sires Stakes (OSS) leg one divisions set for Sunday (July 3) at the Cleveland half-miler. Forty-six 2-year-old trotting fillies in six $40,000 divisions and 65 freshman pacing fillies in eight $40,000 divisions will line up behind the Northfield starting gate, with a post time of 6 p.m., Eastern.

Some of the outstandingly-bred trotting fillies that will compete on Sunday (July 3) include Rose Run Sydney, a Steve Carter-trainee who qualified at Scioto Downs on June 13 in 2:03.4, before winning an Ohio Fair Stake at Circleville on June 19 in 2:09.4. She vies from post two in the first OSS division (Race 1).

Co-owned by Carter and Adam Friedland of Brooklyn, NY and Robert Reid of Mansfield, OH, this daughter of Triumphant Caviar was a $10,000 yearling purchase at the 2015 Ohio Select Sale. Bred by the Rose Run Farm, Rose Run Sydney is the fifth foal out of the Angus Hall mare Stonebridge Dancer 3, 1:57.3f ($34,902), and is a half-sister to Magic Dancing 3, 1:59.3f ($51,929); Magic Hat 4, Q1:57.3 ($38,951); and White Gloves 4, 1:57s ($33,145)—all by Kadabra.

Another regally-bred filly is the Break The Bank K lass Amuse’s, who will carry the colors of owner/breeder Robert Key from post three in the fifth OSS trotting division (Race 12). She is the third of five foals out of the broodmare Sweet Mademoiselle Q1:58.4f ($39,960)—herself a daughter of the mighty Italian-foaled Varenne, unquestionably one of the greatest trotters of all time. Amuse’s is conditioned by Rich Gillock, and made her career debut in a Vernon Downs qualifier on June 4, when she was timed in 2:01.3, before making two attempts at The Meadowlands. Her last qualifier at the East Rutherford facility saw her timed in 1:58 on June 25, with an impressive :27.3 final panel brush.

Pennys N Dimes comes into OSS division four (Race 7) fresh off an impressive qualifier. The daughter of Break The Bank K—also owned and bred by Robert Key—qualified on June 24 at The Meadows in 2:01.3 under wraps for trainer Norm Parker. She’s the fifth foal out of the top-bred Lindy Lane mare Fast Lane K 4, 1:54.3s ($296,289)—herself a Pennsylvania Sires Stakes winner for these same connections. Pennys N Dimes is thus a half-sister to these speedy siblings: Expressway K (by Angus Hall) 3, Q1:55.4f; Dewey Lane (by Deweycheatumnhowe) 2, 1:56.4f; and Liberty Lane (by Deweycheatumnhowe) 2, 1:57.3s.

The filly pacing divisions could be referred to as the “Brian Brown” show, as this Delaware, Ohio-based conditioner sends out a serious group of talented neophyte side-wheelers.

One of Brown’s most impressive fillies is Bye Bye Felicia, a daughter of Woodstock, out of the unraced Camluck mare Tea Time. Bred by Sugar Valley Farm’s Billy Walters and Joe Mclead, Bye Bye Felicia stormed to a winning 1:55.1 Scioto Downs qualifier on June 27, devastating her rivals by a full five lengths. This tenacious filly is owned by Jennifer Brown in partnership with Joyce McClelland, Steve Mullet and Dean Davis. Bye Bye Felicia starts from post five in the first division (Race 2).

Prawn Star is another Brown trainee who scored a qualifying time of 1:57.1 at Scioto Downs on June 27. This daughter of Big Bad John-Jellyfish Joy-Cam’s Magic Trick was bred and is co-owned by Daniel Wozniak and the Kalinoski Stable. Prawn Star starts from post five in the second OSS division (Race 4).

Bellasbrowneyegirl heads up the fourth OSS division (Race 9) from the rail for owner Jennifer Brown and the Lomangino Standardbreds of Tinton Falls, NJ, who also bred the filly. This McArdle lass posted a trio of solid qualifying efforts, with a 2:05 score on June 8 and a 2:01.1 triumph on June 16 at Delaware, before posting a 1:58 mark at Scioto Downs on June 22. In all three efforts for her trainer she brushed home in :29.1 or faster. Bellasbrowneyegirl is the fourth foal out of the A Stud Named Sue mare Cristinella Bella p,4,1:55.3, and is a half-sister to The Illuminator (by Big Jim) p, 2, 1:53.1 ($18,827), now three.

In the fifth OSS pacing division (Race 11), Brown will tighten the girth on Type A Grey, a daughter of Art Official-Just My Type-American Ideal for owner Emerald Highland Farm. Bred by the White Birch Farm of New Jersey, Type A Grey posted back-to-back impressive 1:58 qualifiers—the first at Delaware on June 16 and the second at Scioto Downs on June 27. In the first she flew home in :27.4 and in the second her final quarter was timed in :28.3. Type A Grey—whose Western Terror 3-year-old half-sister Ava N Ella won in 1:53.2 this year, starts from post three in this division.

Finally, Brown sends out Western Art from post five in the sixth OSS filly pacing division (Race 15). Owned and bred by the Miller’s Stable Westrn Art paced to a pair of winning qualifying efforts for her connections. She posted a 1:59 clocking on June 16 at Delaware and followed that up with a 1:58.2 winning time at Scioto Downs on June 27. In both instances her final panels were in :28.4 or faster. She’s by Art Official, and is the first foal out of the Western Hanover mare Western Royalty p, 3, 1:53.2F ($106,498).

Other top contenders include the Brenda Teague-bred, owned and trained lass Gorgeous Halie, a daughter of I’m Gorgeous, out of the Real Artist mare Southwind Halie. This Delaware-based filly was timed in 1:57.3, with a :26.4 final brush in a second place qualifying finish at Vernon Downs on June 18. She then paced in 1:55.4, with a :26.1 last quarter in a Meadowlands baby race on June 24. cGorgeous Halie starts from post two in the third OSS division (Race 6).

Trainer Ron Burke sends Rosemary Rose postward in the seventh OSS division (Race 16) from the five-hole for driver Mike Wilder. This Foreclosure N filly is co-owned by Burke and JV Melillo of Powell, OH and Weaver Bruscemi. Rosemary Rose posted two solid qualifying efforts at The Meadows, timed in 1:59.4 on June 2 and in 1:58.2 on June 12, flying home in :27.

Bred by Ron Salcedo, Rosemary Rose is the sixth of seven foals out of The Panderosa mare Pantathlon p, 2, 1:54.4f ($20,221). Her half-siblings include: Pan From Nantucket p, 5, 1:51.3h ($555,929); Panstakingly p, 3, 1:54.2s ($64,490); Nip Pan Tuck p, 2, 1:54.4s ($50,899)—all by No Pan Intended; and Holiday Romance (by Artistic Fella) p, 3, 1:57.4h ($24,396).
