The 12-1 shot Muscle Scott, driven by Robin Bakker, won the Deutsches Traber Derby at the Mariendorf track in Berlin on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 7).

Muscle Scott, a lightly raced colt sired by Muscle Mass, came from behind to win in the 1-3/16th mile event in a new race record of 1:56.3 (mile rate), followed one length behind by the favorite, Orlando Jet driven by Rudolf Haller, while fast finishing Mr Shorty, driven by Thomas Panschow, finished third.

The purse for the winner was $150,000.

Muscle Scott, who was sold at the Grand Prix Sale in Hamburg as a yearling for $31,000 and is trained in The Netherlands by Paul Hagoort, is owned by a Norwegian businessman.

The maternal side of the pedigree of Muscle Scott says Derby. His dam, What A Spirit (sired by Defi d’Anou) is a half-sister to Unforgettable (sired by Diamond Way) as well as Expo Express (sired by Expo Bi), who both have won the German Trotting Derby.

At the Derby sale in Berlin Saturday evening the highest price was $110,000 paid for Il Capo dei Capi, sired by Muscle Hill. The dam is an Italian mare, Revolution Bi, sired by Varenne, and this is her first foal.

Il Capo dei Capi was bought by the Austrian stable, Stall Antonhoff, who bought a total of four yearlings, which combined cost $170,000.
