Overview of Harrisburg Yearling Sessions

by David Carr

#223 Honky Tonk Hanover (Western Hanover) sold for $200,000 to David McDuffee.

The Standardbred Horse Sale has completed its yearling sessions by posting a six percent increase in average price compared to a similar number sold last year. A total of 1006 youngsters passed through the ring this year, selling for an average price of $31,541. In 2004, 1002 yearlings sold at Harrisburg for an average price of $29,703. This solid increase comes on the heels of a seven percent gain by the sales in Lexington compared to their counterparts last year. These are good signs of the health of the Standardbred industry.

Trotters tallied substantial increases at Harrisburg, averaging $34, 934, compared to last year’s $28,448. First crop sire Andover Hall made a huge impact by averaging $65,053, and he accounted for 10 of the 53 $100,000 yearlings in the sale. Credit Winner and Yankee Glide also enjoyed sizeable increases from last year. Although Muscles Yankee could not duplicate his spectacular numbers from last year, he still made an impressive showing by accumulating the second highest average among trotting sires, $52,841, and contributing seven of the $100,000 yearlings.

The average price for pacers declined four percent to $29,375, with colts suffering the biggest jolt, having a double digit drop. Pacing fillies, typically the laggard among the four sex and gait groups, trailed in Harrisburg as well, but did improve over last year by more than 11 percent. Rustler Hanover had the highest average price, when his sole representative sold for $77,000. Among the pacing sires with more numerous offerings, Western Hanover again led the way, averaging $50,000, although this was a dip from last year. Archrival Artsplace rebounded this year to edge close with an average of $48,070, while Western Ideal and Camluck also posted gains from a year ago. There were some top sires that did not fare so well; Cam’s Card Shark and Bettor’s Delight recorded double digit declines from last year’s lofty figures.
