PA Sire Stakes highlight action packed Derby Day at The Meadows

Washington, PA — Pennsylvania Sire Stakes action kicked off Saturday (May 4) at The Meadows with three divisions 3-year-old pacing colts and geldings going to the gate.

The Bill MacKenzie trained Southwind Ozzi started off the action with an impressive 1:50.4 win for driver Tim Tetrick in his $58,417 division. The Somebeachsomewhere colt made a long first over move and sprinted away with an impressive last quarter of :26. Trainer Brian Brown’s Proof (David Miller) was second with Prince Of Tides (Dave Palone) grabbing the show spot.

The win was a new lifetime mark for Southwind Ozzi who is two-for-two this year with lifetime earnings of $70,536. Vincent Ali Jr. and Alma Iafelice are the owners.

Tim Tetrick returned to the winner’s circle in the $58,417 next race with trainer Brian Brown’s Workin Ona Mystery in 1:50.1, the fastest of the three divisions. The son of Captaintreacherous was making his 2019 debut and did not disappoint.

Coming three wide off a blistering :26.4 third quarter, Workin Ona Mystery drew off to win by 2-1/4 lengths as the 4-5 favorite. Wild Wild Western (Mike Wilder) was a game second after setting blistering fractions of :26.1, :55.1 and 1:22. Captain Malicious and Ray Schnittker finished third.

Beaten only once as a 2-year-old in six starts, Workin Ona Mystery is now six-for-seven lifetime with $129,608 in earnings. He is owned by Diamond Creek Racing, Stambaugh Leeman Stable, Alan Keith and Wingfield Brothers.

The third and final Sire Stakes, for a purse of $58,017, went to trainer John Cancelliere’s Love Me Some Lou and David Miller in 1:50.4. With a strong first over move Love Me Some Lou wore down the pacesetting favorite Captain Victorious (Matt Kakaley) who faded to third. Brassy Hanover and Tim Tetrick got up for second.

Love Me Some Lou paid $7.20 to his backers. The son of Sweet Lou is two-for-two in 2019 and boosted his lifetime earnings to $190,495 for owner John Cancelliere.

In addition to the Sire Stakes, there were four divisions of the Pennsylvania Stallion Series for 3-year-old pacing colts. Welcomed into the winner’s circle were Under Paid (1:51.2) and Captain Koine (1:52.4), both for trainer Ron Burke and driver Chris Page; Branquinho (1:50.4) for trainer Ray Schnittker and driver Tim Tetrick; and Skip To My Lou (1:52) for trainer Robert Cleary and driver Eric Goodell.

Pocono invader Rockeyed Optimist came up the inside to win the $20,000 Preferred Pace in 1:51 for trainer Jake Leamon and driver Brett Miller. The 8-year-old Rocknroll Hanover gelding now has career earnings in excess of $700,000.
