Pair of 14-year-olds shine at Freehold Saturday

Freehold, NJ — It was about as good an outcome as anyone could’ve hoped for on Saturday (Dec. 28) at Freehold Raceway. The two 14-year-olds in the “Free-Old” Pace, Bobjacks Angle A and Camwiser, finished first and second, respectively, to close out their careers.

Sent off as the 5-1 second favorite in the field of seven, Camwiser moved right to the lead and set the early tempo. Meanwhile, Bobjacks Angle A, off at 2-5, was parked for the first half-mile.

Heading around the third turn, owner/driver Steve Smith was able to slide Bobjacks Angle A into the pocket, and he rated there heading into the stretch. Turning for home, Camwiser remained clear, but Bobjacks Angle A got by in the last sixteenth, to win by a length. The pair of war horses finished five lengths clear of third-place Hello Hot Shot.

This is the 35th win in the career of Bobjacks Angle A, from 284 starts. He earned $289,310 in his career. Camwiser concludes his career with 56 wins in 387 starts, including earnings of $225,380.

Following the race, the two veterans were honored with a ceremony in the winner’s circle, including a carrot bouquet.

Live racing resumes at Freehold on Thursday, starting at 12:30 p.m. (EST).
