Paul Szalay Jr., 44, dies

Batavia, NY — Paul W. Szalay Jr., 44, of Elma, N.Y., died Jan. 14, 2015.

Mr. Szalay was a harness racing trainer/driver that raced predominantly in Western New York. During his career he won 478 races as a driver with earnings of $876,093. His last drive came at Batavia Downs on Oct. 6, 2009, a winning effort behind Eternal Revenue. As a trainer he won 505 races with earnings of $1,838,401. His best year as a conditioner came in 2006 when he won 94 races.

Mr. Szalay was the loving father of Gabriella “Gabbie” and Paulie III “PS3”; son of Karen (late Paul Sr.); brother of Tammy (Dan) Gilbert; uncle of Brandon; and is also survived by many special aunts, uncles and cousins.
